yes it is. BUT the it's not breaking confidentiality (which would be unethical if he did) if he doesn't put a name to? who got what. If he said (EG) "John so and so went up to 420 Volts" then that would be unethical and breaking confidentiality. BUT if he simply said "9/10 people [no names included] went up to 420 volts" then it would be unethical yes. People either gave their consent for their results to be published or came forwards about it themselves.

I would have been like, "It's essential to the? experiment? Well, f*ck your experiment." and walked out.

Obedience to authority is a very powerful compulsion, Emma isn't a sociopath she is what the majority of people who ever took part in this demonstrate, even Milgram in? the original experiment did not expect the results he got. In addition to which she probably smiles from nervousness with the 'is he dead' qs

most people will go on because someone? of higher authority says its ok. that the blame is not theirs. thus their infliction of pain was justified.

One variation I thought of that i don't know whether Milgram or anyone else tried, is altering? the demeanor of the "experimenter." Here he's pretty much acting the emotionless, efficient bureaucrat saying that the experiment must continue. Perhaps if they had him adopt a sympathetic but firm tone: "Please,? I understand this is stressful for you, I'm sorry, can I get you a tissue?" etc. Or perhaps an annoyed, even angry tone: "Continue the experiment. Do I make myself clear?"

I've done some reading on the Milgram experiment, but seeing it in action is really chilling. Especially the attractive, seemingly harmless young Emma; I don't think she's evil or hateful, but she very clearly demonstrates how? malleable young people are re: authority and commands to commit atrocious acts. Note that the older participants seem much more likely to protest--the youngsters don't yet seem to really grasp the concept of mortality or have fully a developed conscience.
