A lot of people don't understand this. That's why he's not as popular a name as Beethoven or Copeland. But, to each, his own. There's? an audience for everyone.

Wow...didn't think I would like? it, but it didn't seem as random as people were describing. It sounds like 60's science fiction. Good Stuff!

Hi. I'm here because of Ed. From Five Flavors of Dumb? Sorry to interrupt your deep and thoughtful conversation. ?

out of interest, what? would you rather play?
By: jdebruynviolin. on 10 May 12, 06:56:33
Think of it as an exercise in sound and you may find it easier to stomach.?
By: litlgrey. on 30 Apr 12, 06:36:45
Just a remarkable performance. The courage, the dedication, and the conviction to the score and to the composer are evident in the performers' faces even if you are not clear on the methodology of? the performance.

Can you tell me what is "simple minded" about this, exactly? Varese wrote this piece because he defined music as "organized sound." He cared more about texture, dynamics and density than traditional rhythm or pitch. This piece was one? of the first major works of it's kind (unpitched percussion) and it is a masterpiece.
By: Shubbidubba. on 23 Apr 12, 18:07:19
You mean the maracas just reinforcing the beat (quarter notes) or the ones going "two halfquavers, one quaver"? As for the bar 37, I'm not as mentally challenged as you to count the bars as you did. (Unless you have the score with you, I would call that a very ill passtime.) Then, I'll have to? pass that one.
By: BrainiacFingers. on 23 Apr 12, 17:21:00
You obviously know nothing about music or soul. You haven't answered my? question because you don't have the faintest clue what I'm talking about, yet you feel equipped to criticize that which you do not understand while you trot out the pathetic plebeian cliché that technical mastery and understanding is bad, but ignorance of music theory will somehow make you "soulful". Thank God Beethoven; Stravinsky; Bartok; Bach;Mahler;Varese etc didn't hold your pathetic view of what it is to be a musician
By: BrainiacFingers. on 23 Apr 12, 17:02:52
It's all about discipline. Most people just here a bunch of random noise but don't understand how precisely notated this music is. It takes real skill to play and conduct it accurately. Once the tempo and downbeat? are known, you realise how much it really grooves. The whole piece has a constant pulse. Rhythmically and sonically it's very inventive, especially for the 1920s, the only thing remotely comparable at that point was Stravinsky's Les Noces. Those who say it's "awful" are ignoramuses
By: paradiddle16. on 23 Apr 12, 16:52:09
With a vile response like, your definitely not a musician or anything close to it. You lack soul and it shows. Be? the robot that you are.
By: BrainiacFingers. on 23 Apr 12, 16:45:37
I like the groups of broken quintuplets starting at bar 37, and the polyryhthmic counterpoint to? the snare motif, played by the maracas at bar 9. You seem such an expert on this music, would you say those parts were played accurately?
By: BrainiacFingers. on 23 Apr 12, 16:17:57
No it wouldn't. You just happen to be condition by movie soundtracks. And, you'll be surprised to know, Varese's music was ripped off time and time again for that very purpose. This music needs no images. Images are for those with no imagination of their own.?
By: paradiddle16. on 11 Apr 12, 23:13:01
This would make more sense in a movie? setting.
By: Shubbidubba. on 09 Apr 12, 02:09:50
Buddy. It's indeed awful. I guess many people like it just because Zappa did. Some may like it cause it was novelty in it's time. And some just because they like simple minded things. (I like the end part, though, with the bell-like instrument played with wooden hammers, and the "piano everynote hand? blows.") Just like that.

Things to do today....1) spend an hour listening to Varese....2) put therapist on? my speed dial...
By: crunchbite22. on 05 Apr 12, 00:10:57
You're entitled to your own opinion. After all, music is about how it's perceived by the listener. I, as a composer and musician, understand? what's going on because I studied it, but it doesn't mean I listen to it during my spare time.
By: badazzpresidents23. on 02 Apr 12, 11:49:28
Shut your? mouth.
By: SeadogDriftwood. on 22 Mar 12, 05:47:35
Fascinating. Not my cup of tea, but still fascinating. I like how Varese handled the conclusion - a tam-tam (gong) crash is always a good way to? end a piece.
By: jt4193. on 20 Mar 12, 02:20:35
It's like Skrillex? for classical people.
