That band was one of the best and most underrated in that era. If you see the set Otis does at Monterrey, the band is incredible, but Duck is off the charts amazing. But it seemed to me that Otis was the man who really made it come together. It's a treat to see the band in the Blues Brothers movies. Stax gets a little? overshadowed by Motown, but I favor the Stax\Volt sound.

Don't forget Otis' partner Steve Cropper. Too many people don't know that everything Otis ever recorded was with Booker T and the MG's. Booker, Steve, Duck Dunn and the late great Al Jackson. People should also recognize trumpeter Wayne Jackson and sax player Andrew Love. They were the core horn section at Stax and they came up with all those great memorable horn licks. Otis loved them all and he was always trying to get the whole band to come out on? the road with him.

Otis was an American musical genius, who died way too young. He was just beginning the power he had to communicate through music. "Dock of the Bay"? was a sign that his true musical talents were really emerging. Like Buddy Holly, his true musical achievements were ahead of him. We lost a true American genius when that plane crashed. I miss the great music you never were able to bring to our souls.
