Tom Selleck on the Rosie O'Donnell Show
Posted by: dcalderisi
Video duration: 479 seconds
Global video hits: 485998
May 19, 1999, daytime TV talk show host Rosie O'Donnell ambushed guest Tom Selleck for his support of the NRA and demanded that he justify the freedom to buy assault weapons. It seems he had only intended to plug a movie, but, of course, he commanded the "debate" with reason and logic. As opposed to Rosie's irrational, emotionally driven tirade.

I had my doubts about the realism behind that? offhand shot and range till I googled the big Montana Quigley Shoot. The people that made the movie recorded approx distances to the shots like the one with the bucket and its all within possibility. His rate and jerking of the trigger had me rolling my eyes. The range to the bucket is 350yds btw. During the Quigley match, the bucket is the size of a human torso. Hipower rifle shooters shoot 12in bulls at 200yds like its nothing.

I agree. Though? I thought it was silly how bad guys go flying every time they get shot with his Sharps though.

Your comments are correct, but what was the point. ITS A FILM NOT REAL,,,,so we? all know it is pure fantasy.

The long range shot Quigley made in the movie would be virtually impossible in reality? given the distance of 1,200 yards minimum to the target; his unsteady standing off-hand position; the fact that he was using primitive open sights with no magnification; the target would have appeared as nothing more than a blurred speck at that distance; the poor long range ballistics of the calibre he used; and the significant cross breeze would affect the bullet. Pure fantasy and BS by Hollywood.

The typical American cowboy's wages in the mid to late 1800's was $30-40 per month which equates to $360-480 per year, so $50 represented a? significant amount of money for a hard working cowboy on the range.
By: mbs357. on 03 Jan 12, 00:12:37
Fifty dollars was a ton of money back then. Probably around six to twelve months wages.?

Supposedly, this is? what I heard, Billy Dixon was using a 50-90 and shot a Kiowa at 1538 yards...Supposedly. Hell of a shot, eitherway O.o

$50 would have been a pretty amount of money for some back then,? especially if they were down and out.

those indians were grouped up. His chances? were increased, all he had to get right was elevation. He had a wide target along his front.

@rvndmnmt1 Oh. Thanks for telling me. I'm not really that good identifying different? types of guns.
By: rvndmnmt1. on 11 Sep 11, 15:57:54
That would be the Battle of Abobe Walls and the marksman would be one of the buffalo hunters there by the name of Billy Dixon. He was armed with one of those newfangled .45-70-405's when he pulled that shot and not one of the .45-110 Sharps (yes the cartridge did? exist but for this movie it was glamorized a bit) that Quigley had. Basically shot a medicine man off his horse at a mile or so, give or take, depending on which source you go off of. Your using the army source.

Yep,thats? the one.Apparently they are still discovering some of the old battle sites, projectiles from fights at least out to a half mile.
By: 4325air. on 26 Jul 11, 21:08:00
I believe? what you are thinking of is known as the Fight at Adobe Walls, June 27, 1874. The marksman was Billy Dixon, hitting a medicine man at plus-or-minus a mile with a Sharps. Wikipedia has a decent write-up.
By: mpetersen6. on 18 Jul 11, 01:11:48
the Sharps should have? had equal blling

By: SonicDude87. on 04 Jul 11, 04:42:32
Shots like this are possible given the right circumstances and as long as the shooter's a good enough shot. I read that back during the days of the Texas-Indian Wars, a? soldier, also using a Sharps, knocked a Native American off his horse and that particular Native American was on a ridge about 1,538 yards (nine-tenths of a mile) away.

and i do beg your pardon, it's now been revealed to have been the US Navy? SEALS. and once again, thank-you.
