One of my students teaches her puppy to roll over using positive reinforcement (If it was negative reinforcement, the dog could have just ran away). As several viewers have noted, the student's use of force rule out shaping. This use of force to affect behavior is known as prompting.

"negative reinforcement" was used incorrectly =) The correct term is "positive punishment" It's a? common terminological misuse!

Great? clip. Love the enthusiastic discussion on reinforcers and punishers. It's not inherent to the stimulus whether it works as a punisher or a reinforcer. The only thing that determines the function of a stimulus is its effect on the studied behaviour in the context in which the behaviour occurs. I.e. chocolate can serve as both reinforcer and punisher for the same person, in different contexts.

This clip is great, except for when he uses the term "negative reinforcement" when he really means "punishment"! Why does everyone? make that mistake?!

A system of punishment and rewards exploits a particular desire that we already have, be it for chocolate or trips to the park or? not going to jail. Sheldon is merely telling Penny's subconscious mind, "If you behave this way, you will receive chocolate." Given that she responds in kind, we can assume that, on some level, she finds that arrangement acceptable. Mind control, by contrast, is generally seen as a much more direct process which bypasses a person's actual desires.
By: GregoriusTheBrown. on 29 Feb 12, 14:17:50
There is no such thing as mind control. Operant conditioning doesn't rob anyone of their free will, it merely incentivises them to behave along a particular set of boundaries. As for "commies and? nazis," outright killing people because they are of a particular race or religion isn't operant conditioning, it's just murder; and propaganda is a different form of conditioning altogether.
By: GregoriusTheBrown. on 29 Feb 12, 13:21:09
We try to modify other people's behavior all the time. Bosses do it by offering promotions and bonuses, parents do it openly through punishment and reward, governments do essentially the same? thing with law enforcement, and people do it unconsciously all the time, as we are generally more pleasant to people who don't annoy us. I think it could be debated whether what Sheldon is doing is actually wrong, as it isn't as if he is actually harming Penny in any way.

By: TheDougS14. on 29 Jan 12, 03:18:09
This is really negative reinforcement. NR is not the same as punishment. A negative reinforcer is an aversive or noxious stimulus, the removal of which? is rewarding.
By: sammyrose2812. on 28 Jan 12, 12:05:22
Okay does it matter whether it's negative or positive or whatever. Just enjoy the show? and stop being picky.
By: cashoyt. on 25 Jan 12, 21:19:11
YES! I teach this in my psych & early childhood ed courses. I start by saying, "You now have the responsibility to correct the other 99% of the population that is being taught wrong" (primarily through the media? spoken by characters who should know better)!
By: cashoyt. on 25 Jan 12, 21:16:41
Hopefully the teacher pointed out the error in "negative reinforcement" being used as a synonym for "punishment." I teach psych and early childhood education and it is? incredibly frustrating!!!

I know that you are wrong. You can't add an electric shock to increase a behaviour - it would be to decrease the behaviour - the shock is removed once the desired behaviour is acheived this is the point of reinforcement. You seemed to have forgotten it is not about reinforcement but punishment as well - the Spraying of water is positive punishment (adding something to decrease a behaviour), the stopping? of spray is negitive reinforcement.
