no thats not it, the missing face is the 4th one, left to right from the first pattern. it disappears because its eyes from its bottom half become? part of the 5th ones mustache.

its not missing, its extra, the extra rectangle comes from the two longest pieces that are long enough that they dont need another part, but if you notice the first pattern has longer rectangles (all even) and the next? pattern has shorter rectangles and are also all even in size. the missing face is the 4th one, left to right from the first pattern.
