Tomas Johnsson's goal in the third period gives the New York Islanders a 2-1 lead over the New York Rangers in this fifth and deciding game of the opening round. The Rangers would come back to tie the game late in third, and setting the stage for Ken Morrow's dramatic winner in over time, and keeping the "Drive for Five" alive.

On the other hand, had? Boston won that game, Don Cherry might have become the second Boston coach to resign from a Cup-winning team in the 1970's (In "Grapes"'s case, because he didn't get along well with GM Harry Sinden).

Bos had best record in NHL, 1968 1969 1977 1978 1979 Habs were the team that denied Bruins the Cup although Mon was top team in NHL & favorite all those seasons. Since 1984 Habs & Bruins have split something like 14 playoff series vs each other yet only time that one likely denied the other a Cup was Boston's sweep of Montreal in 2nd round of 1992 but any satisfaction from that revenge only lasted a year.

There is also a? clip of that goal somewhere on Youtube. Smith's error in 1986 was an earthshaking moment in NHL history but Habs also benefitted from NYR upending Flyers & Caps in other division & from Whalers taking out division leader Quebec. As a result, Habs got to play 2nd & 3rd playoff rounds on homeice which was an enormous advantage.

Now all I see is from A's fans is "Giants suck" and from Giants fans "A's suck" ... This is one of the reasons I became a Cardinals fan.

Butch Goring scores on Boston in Game 6 of the 1983 Conference Final at the Nassau Coliseum. Goring does a number on future Hall of Famer, Ray Bourque, and goalie Pete Peters, as his goal gives the New York Islanders a 1-0 lead. The Islanders went on to win the game 8-4 and clinch a birth into the Stanley Cup Final against Edmonton, and eventually their 4th consecutive Stanley Cup.

By 1980, Harris and ... By: vidlivs. on 26 Jun 11, 05:49:51 By 1980, Harris and Dave Lewis were done. Both of them had gotten slower than they already were. Lewis was a stay at home defencemen who pretty much became a weak link in playoff upsets vs the Rangers in 1979 and the Leafs in 1978. Harris was easily? pushed around and was nowhere near as tenacious as Goring. Simply put, they could not perform in the playoffs, they had become passengers who could be replaced among all the young prospects the Islanders had in their system.
You do realize that ... By: vidlivs. on 26 Jun 11, 05:36:16 You do realize that Bourque was easily playing 24-25 minutes a game and sometimes 30 minutes a game. The 2 goals you mention are goals scored late in games. This was a 3rd period goal and Brad May's was in OT. For all these youtube videos which show him getting deked late in shifts or late in games, imagine the countless other defensive plays that he made that people don't bother putting on youtube because they were? ordinary by his standard. He was no Bobby Orr, but he was excellent.

Butch is? considered the missing piece to the Isles Cup hopes. Bob is an alltime clutch playoff man, especially in overtime.
